The Federal Government is making headlines again. This time, it is probably the most ridiculous story, and a national embarassment. Maybe it’s a comic relief, to help you laugh off the dire hardship experienced this season.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday approved the constitution of the governing boards of agencies and parastatals. He has also appointed 209 chairmen and 1258 members to fill the board positions.
However, three of the men on the list have since passed away.
- The President appointed Rev. Christopher Utov as a Member of Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research. Utov, the proprietor of Fidei Polytechnic, Gboko passed away on March 17, 2017.
- Buhari also appointed Chief Donald Ugbaja as a Member of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC). Chief Ugbaja, a former DIG of the Nigerian Police, died on November 29, 2017.
- Finally, Senator Francis Okpozo, was appointed as Chairman of the Nigerian Press Council. Okpozo, a Senator in the Second Republic, died on December 16, 2016. Funny enough, the President had in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, signed a condolence message to Okpozo’s family.
Buhari’s Illness, The Cause – SGF
The Presidency on Saturday explained why there were names of dead persons on the list. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu said that the list was prepared before President Muhammadu Buhari took ill and was subsequently released by the SGF, Boss Mustapha without any alteration.
According to him, President Buhari requested for the submission of a list of fifty names each by the state chapters of the APC in 2015. The lists were later complied by the National Secretariat of the party.
In his words, “The president’s trips for medical attention slowed down completion of the process,”. The president only decided to revisit the matter recently and therefore directed the new SGF to release the list.
