It was indeed a dream night turned nightmare as hoodlums attacked the main campus of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. According to eye witness reports, some armed men numbering over five stormed the Health block of the Nwaniba road campus in Uyo. The attack happened on Thursday night at about 10:13 pm and barely lasted up to ten minutes when an alarm was raised.
Sadly, before the security team could arrive from the gate, the robbers had already made away with every valuable they could place their hands on – laptops, phones and so on. They escaped via the thick bushes which surround the school.
Meanwhile, as gathered, most of those who were reading at the venue were final year students. One of them, who identified himself simply as Victor, is a final year Engineering student could not hold back his tears. He cried out with anger and frustration as according to him, he lost his phone and laptop to the incident. According to him also, all his academic materials including the only copy of his project, his e-books for friday’s examination.
Likewise, the rescheduled SUG elections is set to hold in a few hours. The candidates were said to be campaigning for votes when the tragedy struck.
Efforts to Arrest the culprits underway – Santana
In his reaction, the head of Santana, the private security outfit in charge of securing the school assured that efforts at arresting the hoodlums are ongoing. As at press time, they are still making their investigations.
He however decries the unwillingness of the school management to beef up security in and around the school.
